VPS Security with Enkel Hosting

Recently we’ve noticed a spike in attempts of people trying to hit VPS servers on the Enkel Hosting network with malicious intent. Due to this we’re increasing our security protocols to protect all our clients on our VPS hosting service.

We’re now running extra checks on our host nodes to prevent abuse and attempt to find potential security holes. From now on we are monitoring the following of all clients using our VPS hosting service:

  • Root password strength – We now check if the root password is a strong password, if this is not the case the root password will be reset to a random string.
  • Raw packet data – If a VPS is sending a high amount of data we will auto suspend the VPS and investigate, this is in the case of DoS attacks.
  • Concurrent SMTP connections – If a high amount of concurrent SMTP connections is detected we will suspend the VPS and investigate.
  • Concurrent SSH connections – If a high amount of concurrent SSH connections is detected we will suspend the VPS and investigate.
  • Checks for obvious malicious processes

If you have a secure VPS and have no malicious intent you shouldn’t have to worry about these changes. We are implementing these for the safety and security of our clients and our VPS infrastructure.

Closure of Budget VPS Hosting

As part of our yearly review we check all our hosting services to make sure they are viable and worth offering in the current market. After offering our Budget VPS hosting for over 6 months we’ve decided that it is no longer possible to offer this service to new or existing clients.

2 days ago we removed all references from our website regarding Budget VPS hosting and discontinued products for this service. If you are an existing client of the Budget VPS hosting you should’ve received an email yesterday regarding how to proceed with migration to our SSD VPS hosting or other choices for heading forward. We ask that all existing Budget VPS hosting clients get in touch via a support ticket before the 28th February to ensure a smooth migration.

As for other services clients can be rest-assured that we are happy with their current state and do not plan closing any other services any time in the near future.

Happy New Year, Apple Pay, Service Changes!

2016 has been a great year for us, we’ve grown bigger than we ever expected and we’re more thankful to our clients for their believe in us as a company to deliver a service in the way the expect. Our aim is to make 2017 even greater! We’ve got some great plans throughout the year to promote Enkel Hosting along with improving services, expanding our range and much more.

Apple Pay Support

We’ve just launched Apple Pay support on our website! You can now pay for your services via Apple Pay on your iOS device or macOS Sierra! This adds a quick and convenient method quicker than anything else. We hope to expand our payment gateways even more throughout 2017.

DNS Hosting Improvements

Earlier this year we quietly enabled the ability to get DNS hosting from us for free. Now we’re wanting to improve this offering by strengthening our entire DNS infrastructure. We’re planning to review all our DNS servers and add more redundancy’s in place to offer better reliability. Stay tuned on our blog for more on this later in the year!

Minecraft Hosting Improvements

We’ve recently updated our Minecraft hosting to offer vanilla, CraftBukkit and Spigot builds of Minecraft 1.11 and 1.11.2. Along with this we’re enabling the ability for users to change their own player count, create MySQL databases and more! We’ll soon be introducing more version options ranging from mod packs to older builds of CraftBukkit, Spigot and Vanilla.

Web Hosting Attacks & Improvements

Very recently we’ve become victim to some layer 7 attacks on our own web hosting infrastructure. This seems to be either some specific individual or competitor attempting to cause downtime, in two cases they’ve managed to slow the server down but after the IP’s used being found quite quickly, they was blocked from our network which resumed services as usual. It’s likely that this wasn’t noticed as it occurred mostly on Christmas morning and the following day. We’ve added 7 days onto any of our clients who are using our web hosting to apologies for any downtime during this. However, as a result of this we’re wanting to investigate more automated and quicker methods of detecting and handling these attacks. We currently have monitoring systems in place that notify us within seconds of any issues but we all know how horrible it must be to work on Christmas morning! We’ll be putting new protection methods in place over the next few weeks and will be monitoring them through the months to see how it goes.

Monthly Deals & Unlimited Web Hosting

Monthly Deals

Today we’re happy to announce a new scheme we’re running, every month we’ll be offering a new deal on the homepage of our website! This month is our 40% off budget VPS hosting but we’ve got exciting stuff to come in the next few months!

Unlimited Web Hosting

As well as this we’ve also updated our web hosting plans, we’ve modified the prices, increased the storage and bandwidth and made every other variable such as domains, MySQL databases etc unlimited! Any existing customers will benefit from these new plans at no changes to their cost.

Just a small post for today! We have some exciting stuff coming in the future and we can’t way to show you!

Ticket Response Time & Our Support

Recently we’ve had someone on Twitter tweeting us complaining about not getting a ticket response within 2 days. Obviously the first thing we did was attempt to contact this client, of whom didn’t reply. We then decided to look into our response times for all tickets this year so far.

We looked at how long it took for our support team to respond to a support ticket after it had been opened. Currently our support team aim is to at least respond to all tickets within an absolute 24 hours, although internally we do aim for 12 hours. So far I’m happy to state that we have absolutely kept on track with this target.

Some Awesome Numbers:

  • Fastest Response Time: 1 minute, 46 seconds.
  • Longest Response Time: 7 hours, 44 minutes, 34 seconds.
  • Average Response Time: 1 hour, 16 minutes, 50 seconds.

As you can see by the numbers we’ve never even allowed a ticket to pass the 12 hour mark, never mind the 24 hour mark.

We hope this gives a bit of insight to the company to new and existing clients on how we strive to provide the best support possible. We’d also like to give a quick shout out to a recent post over at Linux for Noobs on VPS hosting comparison.

New Website, Web Hosting Changes & More!

New Website

Today we’ve officially launched our new website! It’s been a few months of work putting it together along with the new branding but we’re very excited for this all new look to Enkel Hosting! We hope the new look will give a more professional feeling to all our clients. Over the next few weeks we’ll also be upgrading the billing panel to the same look as the main site along with some additional enchantments.

Web Hosting Changes

Recently we announced our new web hosting server “purple”. We have plans to finish transfers and re-install the “orange” server for the end of April. Along with this we’ll be moving our billing panel to the same server that the Enkel Hosting website now uses to improve speed & performance. We also launched some new web hosting plans and some changes were made to our web hosting line up, the plans can be viewed on the web hosting page.

VPS Hosting

We’re very pleased to announce since the launch of our VPS hosting late last year we’ve kept a perfect 100% uptime! The uptime & security of Enkel Hosting is our biggest priority. Lot’s of time goes into configuring our servers, checking our security and making sure everything is running as expected. We’vemade some changes to our VPS hosting plans which can be seen on the VPS hosting page.

Minecraft Hosting

Along with the new VPS & Web hosting plans we have also changed the plans/pricing of our Minecraft hosting, you can check them out on our Minecraft hosting page.

Future Projects

Enkel Hosting have a few plans we really hope to pursue in the near future. We’re not going to give too much away but let’s just say, some biomes will be available soon as well as some more VPS control panel features.

Web Hosting Changes

Lately we haven’t being putting as much love into our web hosting as we’d like, we’re going to change that! We’ve recently setup a whole new and more powerful server for our web hosting. The new “purple” server will be the new home of all hosting accounts on our “orange” server. We’ll be contacting any web hosting clients over the next few days to organise the best time to transfer their hosting to the new server. The “purple” server is also in North America compared to Los Angeles.

As for the “orange” server we’re not 100% sure what we plan to do with this. We’ll at least be keeping it for our primary nameserver but we plan to at least reconfigure the server for better optimizations similar to how we’ve configured the “purple” server.

We hope all our web hosting clients are just as excited as we are to move onto the new server. We also have plans for our VPS hosting in the upcoming weeks!

IPv6 Support is Here!

Today we are very delighted to announce the full support for IPv6 across the Enkel Hosting network! After spending many hours investigating IPv6, how it should be handled, how much we should charge etc. These are the changes to services that now support IPv6:

  • Web Hosting (cPanel)
    • All Web Hosting clients can now access their websites via IPv6 with the following address: 2607:fcd0:100:4300::ae47:d207
    • Per account IPv6 addresses can be added upon ticket request for free.
  • VPS Hosting
    • We’ve enabled IPv6 on the host machine, this enables IPv6 to be configured and talk to the outside world using the IPv6 protocol.
    • IPv6 support is currently disabled by default on our VPS servers, we will add IPv6 addresses upon ticket request for free.
    • IPv6 support will be enabled by default in the future once we are happy with the state.
    • Update: We’ve now launched IPv6 for ALL existing and new VPS clients. Every VPS client will now see a /112 IPv6 subnet (65,536 IP’s!) in their SolusVM account. You are able to add IP’s in this range to your VPS using the panel.
  • Minecraft Hosting
    • We’ve yet to fully explore IPv6 support for our Minecraft hosting range. We expect to have something in the upcoming days for this.

As for now the IPv6 support will be closely monitored to make sure everything run’s correctly and smoothly. We still have more web hosting changes upcoming later this month!

Update: Our VPS hosting now uses /96 IPv6 subnet’s instead of the previous /112!

Minecraft Hosting is Finally Here!

Today we’re happy to announce that our Minecraft hosting is now available! We’re launching today with 3 basic tier plans to see how we get going!
Plans consist of 1GB, 2GB & 4GB RAM options. All plans are running on DDR4 ECC RAM with SSD RAID Storage!

You can order the plans and check out what you can get here; https://enkel.hosting/minecraft

Also don’t forget, even the “SAVE40” promotion code is valid on our new Minecraft hosting range!

Stay tuned on the blog, we expect to post very soon about changes to our Web Hosting and more!

Enkel Hosting cPanel Changes

We’ve recently made some changes to our cPanel network to improve reliability, connection speeds, server speeds and to update any hostnames to our Enkel.Hosting domain.

Previously the following address’s were used for our cPanel network:

  • cpanel.enkelhosting.com – Main cPanel Login – Las Angeles, California
  • ns1.enkelhosting.com – Primary Name Server – Las Angeles, California
  • ns2.enkelhosting.com – Secondary Name Server – Jacksonville, Florida

We’ve now changed to the following:

  • orange.enkel.hosting – Main cPanel Server (We are using “orange” to enable future expansion to the network) – Las Angeles, California
  • ns1.enkel.hosting – Primary Name Server – Las Angeles, California
  • ns2.enkel.hosting – Secondary Name Server – Roubaix, France
  • ns3.enkel.hosting – Tertiary Name Server – Beauharnois, Canada
  • ns4.enkel.hosting – Quaternary Name Server – Jacksonville, Florida

As you can see we’ve tried our very best to get a wide range of locations for our nameservers. Currently you can take advantage of these nameservers by checking out our web hosting plans. We do however plan to offer free DNS hosting very soon!

As well as these changes we’ve also started on various improvements to our overall backup systems, we’ll have another post about this in the upcoming days.
